Ellen & Dave

Ellen & Dave

Ceremony and reception venue:

A ceremony in the Pentillie Bathing Hut, followed by a reception in the Pentillie Dining Room.

Length of engagement:

2 months.

In three words, how did you imagine your wedding day?

Intimate, sociable, joyous.

How did you choose your venue?

We were looking for somewhere local, that could accommodate all of our guests for the weekend, that had a beautiful venue for the wedding ceremony, and where we felt a connection with the people running the place, who helped us have a wonderful wedding. Pentillie Castle was perfect.

Special details of the day:

There were so many, we were so grateful to our family and friends for helping us with our amazing wedding, Royston who took our photographs, Linda who did Ellen’s makeup and Brett who produced the most delicious food for the whole weekend. We were also delighted to have True Foxes play for us all on Friday evening. Chloe and Amie have been a favourite throughout our relationship after we saw them for the first time at The Great Estate Festival. Thank you to Chrissie for setting them up in the Drawing Room as a surprise for our guests when they had finished supper.

Our wedding planning story:

We decided once we were engaged that there really was no need for a long engagement, so we looked for a place that could accommodate us at relatively short notice. Once we had visited Pentillie and met Chrissie [Pentillie’s Wedding Manager] and Steve [Pentillie’s House Manager], we knew we were in safe hands. We didn’t have much time, only 2 months in total, and we couldn’t have done it without Chrissie’s advice and suggestions, her supplier list was a great starting point and we were lucky to have friends who could help. We also did some planning ourselves; Dave made the invitations, produced the playlist, and designed the order of service.

Our wedding attire:

Ellie Lowe made Ellen’s bespoke wedding dress in two months exactly from first visit to completion. We were lucky with our timing as she is usually very busy! Ellie has a wonderful eye for style and proportion and the dress was beautiful, it fitted perfectly and was comfortable to wear all day.

Dave wore a traditional kilt from the Scotland Kilt Company, in Farquharson tartan due to his family connection with the clan, complete with a Prince Charlie waistcoat and jacket.

James Holroyd, Ellen’s hairdresser at Yoke in Plymouth, was a hero doing a beautiful job on her hair at short notice.

What is your top tip for other couples?

We were a little concerned we would miss something but Chrissie kept us on track. Her attention to detail is beyond impressive. If there is a tip we can give others planning a wedding at short notice, it is to think about the overall experience you want to create and then to be decisive.

Favourite part of our wedding:

We’ve been asked this a lot! There were so many special moments but our overwhelming memory is one of happiness. Being with the people who mean the most to us at a wonderful house party weekend, chatting, eating delicious food, drinking lovely wine, listening to special music from True Foxes, making our vows in front of a beautiful window overlooking the Tamar River, and experiencing true joy. Steve and Chrissie both had a massive contribution to the success of the weekend and the wedding day itself, from helping guests get to the Bathing Hut and coordinating the wedding meal to perfection to name but two examples.

Thank you to everyone at Pentillie, nothing was too much trouble, any little wish was granted, and we even had a rainbow during our reception! Little things meant so much and we both said on many occasions, [that] there was nothing that we would change it was a perfect wedding experience from start to finish.
