On Sunday 15th July 2018, we hosted our third PenGrillie BBQ Festival and what a sizzling day we had. After a misty start, the blazing sun burnt through and shone for the entire day, how lucky were we?! The event was another roaring success and it was a fantastic feeling for the PenGrillie Team to see so many happy faces.

Black Friday returned as our headline act, with one-man Texas band Slim Semora as a support. Both bands surrounded the event with the most wonderful music and there was dancing and cheers galore.

Some of the South West’s best Street Food Outlets were on hand to provide the most delicious food, with BBQ favourites from Passion and Smoke, wood fired pizzas from Kernowforno and vegan delights from Feniton Foods – just to name a few! Not to mention the amazing homemade ice-cream rolls from Brinkmann’s Ice Cream, a favourite on the sunny day we had. We also had a fabulous array of local trade stands, including Atlantic Blankets and the Cornish Food Box Company.

A big thanks goes to Skinner’s BreweryCornish OrchardsTrevethan Gin and Harbour Brewery, who sponsored our bars for the event. We all certainly enjoyed a gin cocktail to celebrate at the end of the day.

Earlier this year we took steps to reduce recycling and single use plastic, by investing in eco-cups from Branded Cups. By running a deposit scheme, guests could either return their cups or take them home for their own outdoor BBQ days and nights! With the help of our food stands using recyclable food packaging, we managed to reduce our waste by over 50%. We are incredibly proud of our efforts and thank you all for supporting us in our aim of reducing waste.

Our BBQ Competition was even fierier than last year, with teams battling it out in their ‘pits’ to win the coveted title of the PenGrillie ‘Grand Champion’. The competition consisted of four classes; Seafood, Poultry, ‘The Ultimate Chilli’ and Lamb. The Chilli class was judged by a ‘People’s Choice’ vote and raised a sizzling £500 for Children’s Hospice South West. With the addition of their stand, the archery and air rifle shooting activities, they raised an amazing £772.41!

Whilst the results were very close, we are delighted to announce the winners and those in third and second place in each class below…

Class 1: Seafood – 1st The Smokin’ Blokes, 2nd It’s in the Smoke BBQ, 3rd Low and Slow Bros
Class 2: Poultry – 1st Low and Slow Bros, 2nd The Brown Stuff, 3rd Char Wars
Class 3: The Ultimate Chilli (People’s Choice Vote) – 1st The Smokin’ Blokes, 2nd Bare Grillers, 3rd BBQ Chefs
Class 4: Lamb – 1st Char Wars, 2nd BBQ Chefs, 3rd Pig & Pallet

Spirit of the BBQ – Char Wars
The Best Amateur Team – Low and Slow Bros
The PenGrillie Grand Champion – It’s in the Smoke BBQ

Well done all and thank you to all of our lovely judges!

Another massive thanks goes to the sponsors of the prizes, especially to Mac’s BBQ, who gave a whopping £500 to the Champions and several other very generous prizes. We also had the incredible support from the Devon Charcoal Company, who made a ‘Pentillie Special’ charcoal solely from the wood on the Pentillie Estate, for both our competition, demonstration stand and for you all to purchase yourself. If you didn’t manage to grab any on the day or are in need of charcoal for the rest of the summer, don’t hesitate to give them a shout.

Once again, our demonstrations were a hit with the crowd. We hope you all took away some tips from the professionals and managed to taste some of their delicious creations. We can’t forget the Chilli Wing Eating Competition, which we all love and enjoy watching (not so competing)! Well done to all of those who managed to take the spice and to the winner – enjoy your meal for 2 at Inkie’s Smokehouse and thanks to Karen and Team for your kind sponsorship.

As an addition to our children’s entertainment for this year’s event, we asked Higher Beings to come along with their circus skills workshop and stilt walkers and wow, what a hit! Alongside the bungie trampolines, they provided the perfect entertainment and both were busy all day long. As a joint effort Landulph Under 5’s Pre-School and Landulph school PTA hosted our designated Kid’s Corner, providing a variety of arts and crafts, alongside the bouncy castle for the younger ones. The popular area raised crucial funds for the two schools and was boosted by our kind donation of an additional £395!

Thank you all for making our BBQ Festival a fun and successful day, and for all of the very lovely feedback.
